HENERAL LUNA: A BETRAYAL
Heneral Luna, as
depicted in the movie, was a person who is undeniably strong, goal-driven and
has an exceptional sense of patriotism. Heneral Luna was the toughest General
there could ever be, he was the hope against the war, and he was the strength
of the people. Luna used his power sensibly; he used it in order to defend the
country, and that was the joke they had in the movie. Heneral Luna regarded as
Heneral Artikulo Uno was indeed a man of his words, when he took an oath to
protect the Philippines, he had to risk everything for the good of all the
Filipino people. If being a tough leader means you can send off even a higher
authority person to jail, then by all means, Heneral Luna is one tough leader. He
did everything to save the country, literally everything.
That’s why it saddens me to know that Heneral
Luna was alone in his battle all this time. Maybe that’s why democracy at that
period never worked out because Luna was the only who was genuine about his
intentions for the country. Everyone else had their own selfish agenda. And
just when they thought that Heneral Luna had the intention to be in a higher
position, he was caught in a set up by the highest position in the Government.
He was murdered in the most unforgiving way; Heneral Luna died in the hands of
his own people. He was betrayed.
Instead of
uniting with one another to achieve emancipation, someone used their power to
protect the seat that they have even if costs someone’s life. I came to
realize, at that point, that the true enemy was never the one who conquered us.
The true enemy lies within us. Even up to this day, the problem with the youth
is that they pretend that they are united to one goal but the truth is their
goal is to lift themselves up even it takes a life. That is what’s sad about
this film adaptation; we get to see reality and the pain that it has caused to
so many people. This film reevaluates us being Filipinos that in order to
resolve national issues, we have to solve our issues first as citizens of this
country. Maybe after that, we will know what our heart truly desires and by
then, we would achieve freedom not just from other countries but even from
ourselves.
